One strobe definitely worth taking a look at is the Alien Bee series of strobes from Paul C. Buff Inc. (of White Lightning fame) in Nashville, TN. You won't find any of these goodies in the photo stores because Paul only sells them direct to the public from their Website http://www.alienbees.com.

I purchased a few of these extremely competitively priced lights a few years ago and have been adding additional lights and accessories since. Although the housing is made of a polycarbonate material I have yet to break one even after tons of travel including several international shoots. You can get them in either European or US voltage but cannot, unfortunately switch them between the two. They do, however make a portable battery pack for taking them on location that could conceivably be used in a country with opposing voltage, although I have yet to try this. A multi-voltage charger for recharging the battery pack in either 230 or 120 volt systems is available that could make multi-country shooting feasible. Additionally, the charging units also come with a "car charger" for either powering these units directly off your car battery or for recharging them.

One other must have for these units is their remote control system. This device will allow you to separately control up to 4 units at once while providing COMPLETE control of each individual light. Although they come in 400, 800 and 1600 watt second flavors I have chosen to stick with the 400 and 800 WS versions because of their faster recycle times. I simply would rather add several lights to a softbox to achieve the output I need while keeping a very quick recycle time. They do also come with a built-in light slave which makes this approach very quick and simple.
I highly recommend Alien Bee strobes to anyone needing a reliable, light, quick and responsive strobe system today, especially for their unworldly great price. I never thought I would ever be a bee keeper, but now, I think I'll be one for life.

I purchased a few of these extremely competively priced lights a few years ago and have been adding additional lights and accessories since. Although the housing is made of a polycarbonite material I have yet to break one even after tons of travel including several international shoots. You can get them in either European of US voltage but cannot, unofortunately switch them between the two. They do, however make a portable battery pack for taking them on location that could conceviably be used in a country with opposing voltage, although I have yet to try this.

The lights are built as All-in-one units meaning that the flash and pack are all contained in the head of the unit. The power output selector is completely variable via a slider over the full output range of the unit. BTW, unlike some other manufactures, these bees are properly rated for their respective stated outputs and really do pack a "sting".
